12th hour review – iPhone OS 4.0

By Chris Seal on 9 April 2010

I’m one of the lucky few to be test driving the new iPhone OS 4.0, due for public release this summer. I’ve only had it for about 12 hours, and from what I’ve seen so far it’s a lot of what people have been asking/waiting for.

Here’s my highlights:

  • Multi-tasking! Huzzah! A lot of apps will have to be updated to make the most of this feature, but I can’t see this being a barrier to uptake. It takes some getting used to, but I feel it will be taken up very quickly, once it’s available
  • App Folders – Organise your apps all the more. I have my main screen, then a screen of utilities, then a screen of games and so on. Folders will make that all so much easier and saves a lot of screen swiping
  • Merged Mailboxes – I can view my mail in so many ways, I’m still not sure which I like best
  • iAd – Rich media advertising is now built-in (marketers and advertisers applaud/cheer here)
  • And you can have a picture behind your apps

There’s plenty more things going on, but for me, the last 12 hours have notably been about these.

What do you think?
