We worked with the BBC to redesign its jobs website to communicate the wide range of jobs available while creating an inspirational, user friendly experience for potential candidates.
Design the user experience for a new BBC jobsite that will attract talent and be the main channel to search for jobs and give insight into working at the BBC.
The BBC asked us and Penna (a global HR consultancy) to design and build a new jobs website for the entire BBC plus a microsite to attract talent and prospective candidates for roles at the new BBC North offices. We were engaged to ensure that a user-centred design (UCD) process was applied throughout the development of the site.
One of the main recruitment challenges currently facing the BBC, is the move of five major departments from London to BBC North by 2011 potentially creating over 1,000 vacancies. Therefore, our client decided to devote a section of its new jobs website to the external attraction and promotion of these roles.
Overall, we had to ensure the new site reinforced the benefits of working for the BBC and reflect its employer brand ambition to:
Define the user experience strategy, structure and look of our client’s new jobsite through our proven research techniques and ongoing feedback from users and the BBC team.
We began the project with a remote qualitative survey to establish a clear picture of the different types of potential users of the BBC jobsite. We also benchmarked the existing BBC jobs website using a number of usability metrics and gathered feedback on the site from the BBC team.
By identifying key user profiles, we were able to define and agree exactly who we were designing for and develop an initial set of requirements for these groups.
Based on our research, we utilised design, prototyping and user evaluations to explore different solutions. Iterative design evaluations with users allowed us to define the user experience strategy, the structure for the website and the interaction experience. We worked closely with Penna to integrate these solutions with the visual design of the BBC jobs website.
An inspirational jobsite that allows candidates to experience the range of roles available and the benefits of working for the BBC.
The new BBC jobs website boasts a rich user experience that includes interactive media, video, photography and engaging text.
We created a site which is designed to accommodate different users’ needs and goals. It provides candidates with multiple entry points and serves content in a relevant and contextual way that inspires and helps users find where they fit within the BBC.
“We are delighted by the redevelopment of our jobs website and are confident it conveys the opportunities and benefits of employment at the BBC. Working with a team of talented User-Centred Design specialists, we have created a website which will lead us in to the next decade of broadcasting.”
