Shell asked Foolproof to help design the structure for a Group-wide intranet portal.
The site was to be a gateway to the many divisional and country specific sites that exist within the 120 countries that Shell operate in worldwide.
Shell wanted to use the group portal to improve the frequency and effectiveness of its communications with Shell people around the Group. Shell also wanted the site to act as a 'template' for future intranet site development, promoting a consistent user experience for the Shell Group.
We helped Shell define a navigation structure that made information easy to find across a wide range of interests, regions and business divisions.
To gather requirements we conducted online surveys across a worldwide shell audience, and undertook user research in a number of European countries. We followed a user-centred design approach to refine a series of prototypes to ensure that all of the important user groups would find the new site an improvement on the previous intranet.
The new site was hailed a success by Shell, and increased usage of the intranet for learning about Shell issues and accessing resources has been highlighted in a recent staff opinion survey.
"The Shell portal project was a great success. Foolproof quickly understood our business goals, and were able to distil a hugely complicated and varied set of requirements, to form a highly practical, workable and successful set of recommendations."
