How secure is your computer?

By Roger Smithers on 4 February 2010

At this time of year, when seasonal colds and flu are common place, attention is also turning to the types of virus your computer may catch.

In some recent research here at Foolproof it became apparent that consumers are blissfully unaware of the sophistication of viruses, malware and spyware.

Continued exposure to virus threats and hoax emails phishing for our details over the years has de-sensitised us to the threat. Users feel aware of threats and safe from attack, but the reality is vastly different.

Users pay only lip service to the subject of online security and most do the bare minimum to stay safe online. Attitude is bolstered by online retail giants and banks, who bear the brunt of liability in fraud and loss situations in order to preserve customer service and protect revenue.

The end user has little liability for the cost of virus attacks resulting in fraud or financial loss. Given the size of the gap between consumer awareness and virus sophistication isn’t it time to re-educate consumers?
