Making the case for co-creation

By Rachel Buck on 1 February 2010

An iPhone case with graphicOur design philosophy at Foolproof is co-creation: the development of elegant, effective digital experiences through close collaboration with customers. I came across this interesting start-up which has the same perspective.

Case Mate lets customers design their own iPhone cases, but what’s great is that Case Mate has collaborated with a number of ‘world-class’ artists to create a more interactive experience.

So, rather than simply choosing a complete design, you can drag, drop, re-size, rotate, mirror and colour a number of components, which is fun and actually quite addictive. The idea of collaboration with artists is re-emphasised throughout. You can read artist’s profiles and are invited to ‘design a cover’ with specific artists.

Some of the graphics are a bit wacky and at times the usability is strained – I found it difficult, for instance, to remove graphics I no longer wanted without losing the whole design. Some artists also offer more flexibility with components than others.

It’s a neat idea though and probably has legs across a number of mass-market devices.
