Getting to grips with regulation

Added ( 07-07-2008 )

New banking regulations introduced recently in Northern Ireland impacts on the websites of any provider of current accounts to the Northern Ireland market. Any pages using standard text must be easy to understand and must be tested to prove it.

In brief, the Northern Ireland Personal Current Account Banking Market Investigation Order 2008 requires that any specific written communications that contain standard text must be easy to understand by the average customer to whom it is targeted.

The directive requires that any changes made to the standard text pages be tested with a representative sample of customers prior to them being put 'live' by an independent market research company.

We were asked by one of our clients to run a project to check that their current account site would meet the requirements of the directive. To achieve this, we conducted face-to-face research with a sample of target customers and asked users to give a score of between 1-5 on the level of understanding and comprehension of the information that they had been presented with on the pages they were shown.

This provided our client with an evaluation of their site, but also it enabled us to identify some recommendations on how to improve the test pages. Having already developed the questionnaire and methodology, we will be working with our client on an ongoing basis to ensure that it maintains its good ratings.

If you would like to find out more about how we might be able to validate your site to ensure that it conforms to the requirements please call Saul on 0207 53903840 or email him on saul@foolproof.co.uk
