I started my career in User Experience back in 1994 when I started work as a Trainee Store Manager at HMV. At the time this was considered to be a career in retail store operations. In reality it was Customer Experience. Connecting with the local market and community, supporting up-coming local bands, identifying the best place to position the chart displays, selecting the right range to appeal to the local market. From choosing the right staff, communicating in the right tone of voice for seasoned music fans and christmas shoppers - it was all user experience, or more accurately Customer Experience.
From there I moved through a variety of off and online marketing roles at Currys, Argos, Confetti and Blockbuster. These all enhanced my understanding of the value of integrated customer experience across channels. Argos was at the forefront of multi-channel retailing and a place I first experienced real user experience research to inform our design process. If you ask nicely I might share a very sobering experience that taught me the value of testing early!
Moving my career into the varied Agency world was a big but exciting step. I have been lucky enough to build relationships with some of the biggest companies in the world through my time at Flow Interactive and Foolproof and have learnt so much. The great thing is it has shown me just how much more there is to learn.
Since joining Flow back in 2008 and helping to build our new merged business under the Flow and Foolproof brands I have been lucky enough to work with some truly inspiring people and see some really amazing work delivered.
I hope I get the opportunity to share that experience with you soon. When not at work I fill my time with my wife and children, often on a football or cricket pitch or with my other great passion in life, Wycombe Wanderers FC.
