Card sorting

A handy technique for involving users in the development of IA and journeys.

A card sorting exercise

If your digital experience has a wide variety of content and features it may make sense to get your customers to help with information design.

If there are no established rules for how information should be organised into categories, card sorting will help you see the categorisation process through your customers’ eyes.

Nothing kills the user experience like time wasted searching for content. Card sorting minimises the risks you take in organising your information.

It’s a pretty low-tech approach, often using index cards or Post-it® notes. We either ask users to create information groupings from scratch (open card sort) or have them evaluate an existing structure (closed card sort).

Increasingly we are using online tools for card sorting exercises; they can offer a little more flexibility for the participant, and save time during analysis.
