I joined W3C in 1995 working for six years on the formation of guidelines for HTML, CSS, RDF and WAI. I worked with some of the cleverest people around, lectured in the UK and US and authored and contributed to a number of technical publications. I’m also immensely proud of having contributed three entries to Roger’s Profanisaurus in 1998 and they are still there.

In the time I’ve been at Foolproof I have been involved in a multitude of tactical and strategic programmes of work for a wide range of major clients around the globe. Although this can be fun it does mean that I get to sit in a lot of airports, wait in a lot of queues and watch a lot of movies at 40,000ft. It’s got to the point that I hear “Would cabin crew put doors to manual and cross check for landing” in my sleep.

Although much of my time is concentrated in global finance with HSBC I’m also lucky enough to engage with companies in both the retail and gaming market verticals. Earlier this year I had the privilege of immersing myself with one particular client, circling the globe concentrating on gaining a deeper understanding of the differing stimulus, support networks, requirements, social interactions and personal drivers and desires of online gamblers.

My continuing work within Foolproof has confirmed to me the importance of understanding the dynamics and nuances of cultural differences, the political and social influences on how and when users interact with online and mobile, and the effect this has on the approach to online selling and purchasing processes.

In what little time I have to myself I collect cinematography equipment from the 1930’s and attempt to master the ukulele. This is jolly relaxing and helps to clear the mind. It should be said that although I feel I’m doing rather well I fear that the people around me may not feel quite the same.
