Tesco app review

By Chris Seal on 22 October 2010

I love the idea of being able to order my groceries from anywhere and the new Tesco app allows you to do just that. However, the lengthy product download time makes it less useful for weekly shops so I do wonder how many people would be patient enough to shop for groceries using their iPhone/iPod Touch.

Tesco iPhoneThe negatives:

  • It only works when you’ve got an internet connection. This is fine for an iPhone, but Touch users will have to be on WiFi. A pain if you’re out and about
  • Even with WiFi, it’s not the fastest at loading products in each category. If you know what you want to buy, it’s certainly a lot faster to use the search function to look for it, but this could easily get tedious for your weekly shopping

The positives:

  • Like online you can shop using your ‘Favourites’. Amazingly, this picked up almost everything I’d ever bought from Tesco, thanks to my Clubcard being linked to my online account, which was both surprising and impressive. However, this doesn’t make up for the slow download time
  • Selecting a delivery slot is simple and effective, allowing you to choose a convenient time and date versus price of delivery

This app is ideal for amending an existing order when out and about, but feeding a family of four on a weekly basis may prove to be somewhat tiresome. It’s the first version of the app, so plenty of room for development over time.
